Minister Maninder SidMinister Maninder Sidhu concluded the first visit by a Canadian trade minister to South China since 2018, using the trip to advance Canada’s trade diversification agenda and secure concrete commercial gains for Canadian exporters.
Building on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s earlier visit to Beijing, he met with senior Chinese officials to expand market access and identify new commercial opportunities for Canadian firms. As Guest Country of Honour at the China International Consumer Products Expo, Canada showcased nearly 40 companies across consumer goods, agri‑food, seafood, health and wellness, and lifestyle sectors, reinforcing the Expo’s value as a platform for Canadian brands. The visit generated 24 new commercial agreements worth millions of dollars and highlighted the restoration of Canadian beef exports to China. Sidhu also engaged major e‑commerce players such as Alibaba and JD.com to help Canadian businesses reach China’s vast online consumer base, and met leading electric‑vehicle manufacturers in Guangzhou to discuss Canada’s EV import quota and investment opportunities in Canada’s clean‑transportation supply chain.
Throughout the mission, he emphasized a practical, results‑driven approach to strengthening Canada–China trade ties, supporting exporters, and attracting investment.
