New animal products returning shipments policy

On July 10th, 2024, the document Terrestrial animal products and by-products: Returning shipments policy, will be implemented and posted on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website. It is about shipments of animal products or by-products (other than edible meat) that have left Canadian territory, but then need to be returned to Canada. 

Summary

  • the scope includes the return of pet food/treats/chews, rendered products, dairy/egg/bee products, raw inedible material, lab samples, manure/fertilizer, hides/skins/furs/game trophies etc.
  • the requestor must apply to the CFIA for an import permit and include details that clearly explain the situation
  • the CFIA will then review the application and determine the animal disease risk
  • return requests will no longer automatically be rejected if the shipment was exported without a certificate, and the explanation will be considered
  • after the CFIA review, a decision will be made whether to provide an import permit for the return of the shipment
  • an inspection of the shipment at the port of entry into Canada or an inland site may be required

Nouvelle politique de retour des produits d’origine animale

Le 10 juillet 2024, le document Produits et sous-produits d’animaux terrestres : Politique de retour des expéditions, sera mis en œuvre et affiché sur le site Web de l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments. Ce document traitera des envois de produits ou sous-produits d’origine animale (autres que la viande comestible) qui ont quitté le territoire canadien, mais qui doivent ensuite être renvoyés au Canada.

Résumé

  • la portée comprend le retour des aliments/friandises/produits à mastiquer pour animaux de compagnie, des produits d’équarrissage, des produits laitiers/d’œufs/d’abeilles, des matières premières non comestibles, des échantillons de laboratoire, du fumier/engrais, des cuirs/peaux/fourrures/trophées de gibier, etc.
  • le requérant doit demander un permis d’importation à l’ACIA et inclure des détails qui expliquent clairement la situation.
  • l’ACIA examinera ensuite la demande et déterminera le risque de maladie animale.
  • les demandes de retour ne seront plus automatiquement rejetées si l’envoi a été exporté sans certificat, et l’explication donnée sera prise en compte
  • après l’examen de l’ACIA, une décision sera prise quant à la délivrance d’un permis d’importation pour le retour de l’envoi.
  • une inspection de l’envoi au port d’entrée au Canada ou sur un site intérieur peut être requise.
