New conditions for the import of animal blood products (including whole blood, serum, fetal bovine serum and plasma) from New Zealand into Canada will be implemented on March 31, 2026 and will be available in AIRS. They provide added protection to susceptible Canadian animals from Japanese Encephalitis, Tuberculosis, Brucellosis and Bluetongue.
A 1-year transition period starting on March 31, 2026 will be used to implement the new conditions:
- shipments over 1 L require an import permit and new or renewed import permits will include the new conditions
- the conditions in the zoosanitary certificate must match those in the permit used to import the product
- existing import permits for these products shipped directly from New Zealand to Canada will be updated with the new conditions on March 31, 2026
- shipments that are 1L or less only require a zoosanitary certificate (not an import permit) and either the old or new conditions will be accepted in this certificate during the 1-year transition period
- after the 1-year transition period (ending March 30, 2027) only the new conditions will be accepted
The new conditions do not apply to highly processed products or rendered products (such as blood meal) made from animal blood.

Nouvelles conditions d’importation des produits sanguins en provenance de la Nouvelle-Zélande
De nouvelles conditions d’importation des produits sanguins animaux (notamment le sang total, le sérum, le sérum fœtal bovin et le plasma) en provenance de la Nouvelle-Zélande vers le Canada entreront en vigueur le 31 mars 2026 et seront disponibles dans le système SARI. Elles offrent une protection accrue aux animaux canadiens sensibles à l’encéphalite japonaise, à la tuberculose, à la brucellose et à la fièvre catarrhale ovine.
Une période de transition d’un an, débutant le 31 mars 2026, permettra la mise en œuvre de ces nouvelles conditions :
- Les envois de plus de 1 L nécessitent un permis d’importation. Les nouveaux permis et les permis renouvelés devront inclure les nouvelles conditions.
- Les conditions du certificat zoosanitaire doivent correspondre à celles du permis d’importation.
- Les permis d’importation existants pour ces produits expédiés directement de Nouvelle-Zélande au Canada seront mis à jour avec les nouvelles conditions le 31 mars 2026.
- Les envois de 1 L ou moins nécessitent uniquement un certificat zoosanitaire (et non un permis d’importation). Les anciennes ou les nouvelles conditions seront acceptées sur ce certificat pendant la période de transition d’un an.
- Après la période de transition d’un an (se terminant le 30 mars 2027), seules les nouvelles conditions seront acceptées.
Les nouvelles conditions ne s’appliquent pas aux produits hautement transformés ni aux produits d’équarrissage (comme la farine de sang) fabriqués à partir de sang animal.
