Prime Minister Carney advances new trade, economic, and security partnerships with ASEAN nations

Prime Minister Mark Carney concluded his visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he participated in the ASEAN Summit and engaged with global leaders and investors to advance Canada’s trade, technology, and energy interests. He fast-tracked negotiations on a Canada-ASEAN free trade agreement, aimed at opening new markets across the Indo-Pacific, and committed $25 million in technical assistance to support its implementation. During the visit, Carney held bilateral meetings with leaders from Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, as well as the European Council and South Africa. Talks with the President of the Philippines led to plans for launching free trade negotiations, with a target completion date of 2026. Carney also met with regional investors and business leaders to highlight Canada’s economic potential.
