Steel permit validity permit extended to 30 days

In follow-up to advocacy from the CSCB (CSCB advocacy may lead to changes in steel permit validity period; Member log-in required), Global Affairs Canada (GAC) has announced that, effective September 11, 2025, shipment-specific import permits for steel will be valid for 30 days rather than 20 days. This aligns the validity period for steel import permits with the validity period for other commodities impacted by GAC’s individual import permit regime.

Item 4.2.2 of Notice to Importers: Item 82 - Steel Goods – Serial No. 1142 (https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/controls-controles/notices-avis/1142.aspx?lang=eng) states:

“Shipment-specific import permits are issued with a validity period of 20 days around the date of entry specified by the importer. Specifically, the permit will be valid 5 days prior and 14 days after the date of entry specified by the importer. As of September 11, 2025, permits will be issued with a validity period of 30 days around the date of entry specified by the importer. Specifically, the permit will be valid 5 days prior and 24 days after the date of entry specified by the importer.”
