Trump signs order to double steel and aluminum tariffs at midnight

Effective at 12:01am ET this morning Wednesday June 4, 2025, the US has doubled the existing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's office said the United States had no legitimate reason to double its tariffs. "The additional tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum announced today by the United States are unlawful and unjustified,"

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly stated this week that Canada plans to use Canadian steel in our infrastructure projects, in order to provide support for those local companies affected by the US tariffs.
