Union Pacific to buy Norfolk in $85-billion mega US railroad deal

Union Pacific has officially announced an $85 billion deal to acquire Norfolk Southern.

If approved, the combined network will create America's first coast-to-coast freight rail operator and reshape the movement of goods across the U.S. However, the deal will face lengthy regulatory scrutiny plus labour unions have concerns about potential job impacts and service disruptions.

The review process could take 19-22 months, with a possible decision coming in early 2027.
