The World’s Customs Administrations Featured in WCO Photo Contest

One of the highlights of the annual World Customs Organization (WCO) Council events is a photo contest, in which delegates vote for their favourite photos among those submitted by WCO members. It is always interesting to see how many of these photos feature Customs dogs at work, and it is also interesting to see how Customs administrations portray themselves in the photos and their captions. This year, many of the photos reflected themes relevant to Customs administrations’ responses to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The Council meeting, usually held in person at WCO Headquarters in Brussels, was held virtually this year. The photo contest was also held virtually and we are pleased to share with you the winning photo, below, from Kazakhstan Customs. We’ve also included the photo from Canada Border Services Agency this year, which highlights CBSA’s important role with people, not only goods.

My Loyal Friend
A Customs officer in uniform with his loyal friend ready to start his day despite the spread of COVID-19 all over the world. It is crucial for Customs to continue to ensure the safety of goods and to facilitate global trade while, at the same time, guaranteeing the protection of society, especially during this health crisis.

Helping citizens stranded abroad
In support of the repatriation of Canadians stranded abroad at the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, a team from the Canada Border Services Agency helps returnees after their long journeys back to the safety and comfort of their home. Canadian Forces Base Trenton, where this photo was taken, is home to many, including some of those officers involved. It has been the location of many high and sombre moments: from reunions of families and friends, to the solemn return point of those who have been lost overseas. The ability to aid in safe returns and provide security to those in need was among the high points.
