The CSCB Award of Excellence

Eligibility Policy And Nomination Procedures

     Purpose:

  1. This policy describes the eligibility criteria and the process by which Canadian Society of Customs Brokers (CSCB) members may be considered for a CSCB Award of Excellence, which recognizes CSCB members who have made significant contributions of time, energy and initiative in support of the Society and its objectives.

    Eligibility:

  2. Active CSCB members (including owners and employees) are eligible for nomination.
    1. Retired employees of active members are eligible for nomination within two years of their retirement.
    2. Employees of non-active members, including those who have not paid their membership dues by the payment deadline, are not eligible to be nominated.
  3. Preferred Business Clients (including owners and employees) are not eligible to be nominated for this award. If desired, the CSCB Board of Directors may consider other options to recognize the contributions of a Preferred Business Client to the Society.
  4. The CSCB Award of Excellence is presented to individuals. Teams or entire member firms are not eligible to receive this award.
  5. Individuals must be nominated by another CSCB member and may not self-nominate.
  6. Receipt of an award is not automatic based solely on meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to a majority decision by the Board.
  7. Individuals may receive a CSCB Award of Excellence only once. Eligible nominees who are not selected to receive an award in a given year may be nominated again in subsequent years.

    Criteria:

  8. The following is a non-exhaustive list of the types of activities and effort undertaken by an individual that could justify a CSCB Award of Excellence nomination:

    1. Completion of 10 or more years of service on the CSCB Board of Directors;
    2. Representing the CSCB in a leadership role in advocacy with government agencies for 3 or more years (for example, co-chairing a Border Commercial Consultative Committee sub-committee);
    3. Representing the CSCB in a high-profile public initiative, such as leading a public awareness campaign or testifying before a government committee as a CSCB representative;
    4. A combination of activities over a period of 10 or more years that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to advancing the goals of the Society. Such activities could include:
      1. serving on CSCB national committees;
      2. leading a regional committee;
      3. coordinating national or regional events such as member or designate days, webinars, or special events; or,
      4. such other activities as the Board may deem relevant and appropriate in its consideration of an individual’s nomination.

    Process:

  9. Nominations may be submitted throughout the year by providing a complete package to the CSCB National Office ([email protected]) that includes:
    1. The name of the nominee and their role within a CSCB member organization;
    2. Details about the nominee’s involvement with CSCB, including information about their participation on the Board, in committees, or in other circumstances that would allow the Board to determine if the nominee meets the timeframe aspects of the eligibility criteria (where relevant); and,
    3. A 250-500 word narrative, written in the nominator’s own words, to explain why the individual is being nominated. Standardized/templated/verbatim submissions from multiple nominators for the same nominee will not be considered by the Board.
  10. At its June Board meeting, the Board will consider all nominations submitted in the preceding 12 months. Up to three (3) individuals will be selected to receive a CSCB Award of Excellence each year. The awards will be announced (and presented in person when possible) at the CSCB National Conference in the Fall of the same year.
  11. After the Board has made its selection, CSCB staff will undertake the following steps:

    1. Draft a letter to the nominators of award recipients, on behalf of the CSCB Board Chair, to advise that their nominee has been selected to receive an award;
    2. Draft a letter to the nominators of those not selected to receive an award to advise of the Board’s decision, and to encourage them to resubmit a nomination for the next awards cycle if they so desire;
    3. Draft a letter to each recipient of the CSCB Award pf Excellence, on behalf of the CSCB Board Chair, to advise of their selection as an award recipient, and to confirm details such as preferred name spelling, to facilitate the preparation of the award;
    4. Arrange for the purchase and engraving of the awards;
    5. Coordinate with the Board Chair and the recipients to arrange for the announcement and/or presentation of the awards at the CSCB National Conference;
    6. Prepare and publish notifications in the Trade News and on social media to announce the CSCB Award of Excellence recipients (concurrent to the announcement and/or presentation at the National Conference).

    Implementation:

  12. This policy comes into effect on September 21, 2024. The first award cycle will begin on September 23, 2024, with the first group of nominations to be considered by the Board of Directors in June 2025.
