Study: Economic growth in Canada and the United States

The following is excerpted from a 21 December 2011 release by Statistics Canada. Living standards in Canada are growing at a faster pace than in the United States even though comparisons of labour productivity—the most often-cited indicator—show Canada falling behind during the past decade. Two other measures of standard of living—real gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and real gross national income (GNI) per capita—show that Canada's performance has improved relative to the United States during this period.

December K84 Update - Quebec

CBSA have clarified their message regarding payment of December’s K84. They have confirmed that it is only those who pay their K84 at a bank in Quebec who may make payment before 11:30 on January 4 without penalty. Those who pay their K84 at a CBSA office must do so on January 3. The text of CBSA’s message follows.

Milk Protein Substances Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) Quantities Available Immediately

The purpose of this message is to inform industry stakeholders that quantities of tariff rate quota (TRQ) for milk protein substances (MPS) with a milk protein content of 85% or more by weight, calculated on the dry matter, that do not originate in a NAFTA country, Chile, Costa Rica, or Israel for the period of April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012 have become available. Reminder-Designated Border Ports of Entry for Feeder and Slaughter Horses Entering Canada from the United States

Invitation to comment: CFIA user fee and service standard proposal for Destination Inspection Service

The following is a 19 December 2011 notice from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is inviting comments on a user fee and service standard proposal for Destination Inspection Service. Destination inspection is a quality-based inspection of fresh fruits and vegetables. The results of these inspections help settle commercial disputes, primarily between sellers and purchasers. The proposal sets out a new set of fees and service standards that would be introduced on April 1, 2012.

Loonie extends gains to touch session high after U.S. data

The following is from the 20 December 2011 edition of Reuters Canada. Canada's dollar extended gains to touch a session high against the greenback on Tuesday after stronger-than-expected data on U.S. housing starts soothed investor fears about a global economic slowdown. At 8:55 a.m., the Canadian dollar was at C$1.0304 to the U.S. dollar, or 97.05 U.S. cents, up from about C$1.0339 versus the U.S. currency, or 96.72 U.S. cents, before the data. On Monday, the currency ended the North American session at C$1.0387 versus the greenback, or 96.27 U.S. cents.

We were advised yesterday that CBSA hopes to have these files available on their website this afternoon (December 20th) or tomorrow morning (December 21st).
