Minister Lebel meets with U.S. counterparts to discuss transportation initiatives

The following is a 9 December 2011 news release by Transport Canada. Today, the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, met with the United States (U.S.) Secretary of Transportation, Mr. Ray LaHood, and the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Ms. Janet Napolitano, in Washington, D.C., to discuss transportation initiatives and security measures that support job creation and economic growth in both countries.

Simplified entries pilot to start in January [U.S.]

U.S. Customs is on track to begin receiving simplified entries by the end of January from nine brokerage firms participating in a new pilot program to streamline the types of documentation required to import merchandise, Steve Hilsen, director of trade policy and agreements, said Monday.

Customs Tariff - Concordance Tables Update

CBSA’s website now shows updated concordance tables, revised on December 2. These tables were produced by Statistics Canada, based on TN 2011-4, and include the November 17th Department of Finance changes. The CSCB has converted these files to Excel, a more user-friendly format for our members.

AMPS Bulletins

CBSA’s has updated the list of current AMPS bulletins on their website. Expired bulletins are also available. These bulletins are intended to be a temporary communication tool used to provide advice on policy and internal procedures relative to the AMPS program.

In Memoriam - Frank Sellar

The CSCB was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Frank Sellar. From 1964 to 1966, Mr. Sellar served as the chair of the DCCHBA, a predecessor to the CSCB. Visitation will take place at McCleister's Funeral Home, 495 Park Rd. N., Brantford, on Monday, December 12th, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held there at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Brantford (http://www.bgcbrant.ca) or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

CFIA and 2012 WCO Tariff Changes

The following is a message from CFIA. In response to your recent request for information regarding the WCO HS Code changes for 2012. Previously, CFIA Import Control Division circulated the WCO changes made in AIRS after they were published on January 1st. This year, the Import Control Division will strive to make this information available to the Importers / Brokers prior to implementation January 1, 2012.

Certain Mattress Innerspring Units from the People's Republic of China - 2011, Notice of Re-investigation

Dumping file #: 4214-24 Dumping case #: AD/1383 The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has today initiated a re-investigation, in accordance with the Special Import Measures Act (SIMA), of the normal values and export prices of certain mattress innerspring units originating in or exported from the People's Republic of China. The subject goods are described as certain mattress innerspring units, with or without edgeguards, used in the manufacture of innerspring mattresses, originating in or exported from the People's Republic of China.

Harper/Obama Announcement on Trade and Security

This afternoon Prime Minister Harper and President Obama announced two action plans relating to border trade, travel and security. Contained within these plans are a number of issues of direct interest to customs brokers. Tomorrow the Border Commercial Consultative Committee will hold a conference call to discuss the practical implications of these policy announcements for the private sector. Following that call, any additional information received will be provided to members.
