Effective February 24, 2010, shipments of tomato fruits from countries infested by the insect pest, Tuta absoluta, will be required to be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate with an additional declaration stating: “This consignment originated from a place where Tuta absoluta is known not to occur and was inspected and found free of Tuta absoluta”. Shipments not meeting this requirement will be refused entry to Canada. The new phytosanitary import requirement for tomatoes will soon be available in a new policy directive (D-10-01).

The following news release was issued by the CBSA on 8 February 2010. The Canada Border Services Agency announced that, effective immediately, the maximum number of lanes at the four Lower Mainland border crossings will be open for travelers, 16 hours a day, until February 28, 2010. Effective January 1, 1998, the British Preferential Tariff (BPT) treatment was revoked. The Uruguay Round Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff rate reductions have eliminated the margins of preference for most BPT tariff items with the exception of 11 tariff items respecting woollen fabrics. These tariff items continue to receive tariff preference equivalent to the former BPT rates by way of Order in Council (OIC) P.C. 1997-2003, Regulations Respecting the Customs Duty Payable on Woollen Fabrics Originating in Commonwealth Countries.
