CFIA Eastern Import Service Centre transition

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) Eastern Import Service Centre (EISC), located in Anjou, Quebec, is transitioning from a service centre that serves Eastern Canada and Quebec to a satellite office, the National Import Service Centre Satellite Office (NSO) that will support the National Import Service Centre (NISC) in Toronto and serve all of Canada. The operational and service procedures for Importers, Brokers and Stakeholders will remain the same. The transition began on February 1, 2011 and will formally be in place as of April 1, 2011.

eManifest Portal Update

CBSA announced today that the eManifest Portal will be available to highway carriers in early summer 2011 and accessible from the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) Web site. A specific date will be confirmed as soon as it is announced by CBSA.

Free trade with Europe would be good for Canada

Canada posts first trade surplus since Feb. 2010

The following is from the 11 February 2011 edition of "The Canadian Business Journal". Canada swung to a $3 billion trade surplus in December, distancing the country from a record deficit in July to the first winning month since February 2010. Exports gained 9.7 per cent as volumes grew 6.6 per cent. Energy led the way with a 25.1 per cent advance, accounting for half the increase in exports, according to Statistics Canada's latest figures. Imports saw a meagre 0.7 per cent, as prices saw their first rise in five months.

Canada to seek WTO review of EU ban on seal products

The following is a 11 February 2011 news release by Reuters Canada. Canada will ask the World Trade Organization to set up a formal dispute resolution panel to address the European Union's ban on trade of seal products, Canadian Fisheries Minister Gail Shea said on Friday. The European Union closed its borders to seal products last year, when an EU court decided to impose a ban even though a legal challenge from Canadian seal hunters is still in progress.
