Canadian dollar returns above parity

Canada's dollar returned to above parity against a broadly softer U.S. dollar on Tuesday, though gains were held in check by a softer price of oil. The currency skidded nearly a penny in the previous session, hitting its lowest level this year before paring losses, after Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's cautious remarks on employment prompted investors to price in a weak January jobs figure on Friday.

CBSA announces creation of new southern Ontario region

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today announced administrative changes to its operations in southern Ontario. Effective April 1, 2011, the CBSA will amalgamate its two regions in Windsor/St. Clair and Niagara Falls/Ft. Erie. This change will not impact border operations and all ports of entry and services offered will remain. The principle change is that the administration of the regional headquarters offices will be consolidated into one regional office located in Fort Erie.

New Canada environment minister offers no new plans

Canada's new environment minister said he plans to work closely with the United States where possible on new policies and that no new legislation is needed to carry out the Conservative government's environmental plan. Peter Kent, in his first speech since being named environment minister earlier this month, said the government would continue with a sector-by-sector regulatory approach on the environment, aligning its policies with those of the United States where appropriate.

The section titled Penalties has been added to reflect the authority to issue administrative monetary penalties for failure to comply with marking requirements.
Second NEXUS Lane opening at Canada Border Services Agency plaza

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority (PBA) today announced the installation of a second NEXUS lane within the Peace Bridge CBSA plaza. This new NEXUS lane will provide additional expedited processing opportunities during busy commuter times and other peak travel events at the crossing.

77YY Itinerant Highway Carrier Code

With the implementation of eManifest, all carriers will be required to use a CBSA-assigned carrier code and the use of itinerant carrier codes will be eliminated. As such, effective April 1, 2011, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will no longer accept the “77YY” itinerant highway carrier code.
