Sales from foreign affiliates of Canadian companies growing twice as fast as exports

Export Development Canada study The following is excerpted from the 10 February 2011 news release by EDC. Canadian foreign affiliate sales (FAS) grew at twice the rate of Canadian exports between 2000 and 2008, a new study by Export Development Canada (EDC) shows. The study found Canadian FAS reached $508 billion in 2008 and surpassed Canadian exports to all major world regional markets except the United States.

Canada Consumer Product Safety Act

In August and October of 2010, members were advised that Health Canada was consulting on the Mandatory Reporting Policy of the proposed Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. Although not yet in effect, this Act was passed on December 14, 2010. The Mandatory Reporting of adverse events, dangerous defects and/or known recalls involving consumer products is an important new component of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and Health Canada’s consultations covered:

Napolitano denies border is unsecured

The following is from the 10 February 2011 edition of "montrealgazette.com". U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano yesterday sought to debunk a congressional report's finding that U.S. border agents adequately secure only 51 kilometres of the boundary with Canada.

N.A. surface trade up 15.5% y-o-y in November

The following is from the 8 February 2011 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US and Mexico was 15.5% higher in November than in November 2009, reaching $68.1 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. BTS reported that the value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico fell 3.6% in November from October.

Minister of Transport looks to partnerships and innovation for Rail 2030

This memorandum outlines the policy of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in regard to the tariff classification of garments that have an outer layer made up of a textile fabric, which has been impregnated, coated, covered or laminated with cellular plastics, where the textile layer faces the exterior. In Memoriam

The CSCB has been advised that, last month, two members of the B.C. customs brokerage community passed away. James Albert (Jim) Kendall was the President and CEO of Summit Customs Brokers. Thomas (Tommy) Jorgensen founded Columbia Customs Brokers along with several associates. The CSCB on behalf of its members sends its condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Kendall and Mr. Jorgensen.

a) Chapter 12 was published to add the conditions for the end use "human consumption" for the following HS Codes. 12.07.99.0119.01 - Palm nuts and kernels (whole) 12.09.99.0076.02 - Cannabis sativa (Hemp), grain or non viable seed 12.12.20.0021.10 - Hijiki seaweed 12.12.20.0021.90 - Other algaes and seaweed 12.12.99.0102.00 - Fruit stones and kernels (apricot, peach, nectarine or plum) This generated a requirement version change for the following HS Codes for all origins.

In Memoriam - Donald Butcher

The CSCB is saddened to learn of the passing of Donald Butcher yesterday in Kelowna. Don was former President of Thompson Ahern & Company and The Federated Group. He is survived by his daughter Lisa (Stephan) Mostowy and their daughters Siena and Simone; son Michael (Jasmine) Butcher and his brother Edwin Arthur Butcher. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 10 at 1pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the BC Cancer Agency, No. 2-111, 675 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1L3.
