Government of Canada Announces Resumption of Beef Exports to Costa Rica

The following is a 7 February 2011 news release by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Minister of International Trade Peter Van Loan announced today that Costa Rica has reopened its market to allow for full, unrestricted access to Canadian beef and beef product exports. To highlight this success, Canada’s top quality beef will be served at the Canadian Ambassador’s Official Residence in San José, marking the first time in almost a decade that Canadian beef will be shipped to Costa Rica.

Elimination of Account Security Requirement for Release Prior to Payment Rethought

Last week during the CBSA Border Commercial Consultative Committee meeting here in Ottawa, it was announced that the date of April 2012 is no longer linked to the elimination of the account security requirement for release prior to payment. This issue has not been removed from CBSA’s agenda but now is part of the broader and much longer term CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) project which is intended to modernize the assessment and revenue management programs and systems of the CBSA. The current CARM timeline runs from 2011 through 2018.

World stocks were firmer, hovering near a 29-month high, and copper rallied to a record high while oil prices were also advancing.
Canadian Pacific and union reach tentative labor deal

The following is a 5 February 2011 news release by Reuters Canada. Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd and a union representing 2,100 staff said on Saturday they have reached a tentative labor deal, averting a strike at the country's second-biggest rail carrier. The company and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), which represents mechanical services employees, issued separate statements that said they reached a tentative contract settlement that will be sent to union members for ratification.
