Canada's trade deficit shrinks in October

The following is from the 10 December 2010 edition of "Reuters Canada". Canada's trade deficit with the world narrowed more than expected to C$1.71 billion ($1.69 billion) in October from a revised C$2.31 billion deficit in September, in spite of a declining trade surplus with the United States, according to Statistics Canada data on Friday. NOTE: Analysts surveyed by Reuters had on average forecast a deficit of C$2.10 billion in October, with exports at C$33.50 billion and imports at C$35.70 billion. ($1=$1.01 Canadian)

Lamy calls on global co-operation for the smooth flow of trade

Director-General Pascal Lamy, in the presenting his annual report on developments in the international trading environment on 9 December 2010, said: “The global financial and economic crisis and the WTO’s trade-monitoring exercise have shown the importance of increased transparency for the smooth functioning of the multilateral trading system. Again, progress in this area depends on active participation by all Members. The comprehensive, accurate and neutral nature of the monitoring reports can be ensured only through an active participation of all delegations.

Prescott Port of Entry lanes to be moved starting December 9

CSCB Partners with CCC to Promote Border Efficiency

In early 2010, the CSCB was approached by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce with a request to partner with them on a document project, now titled “Strengthening Our Ties: Four Steps Toward a More Successful Canada-U.S. Partnership”. The CSCB Board of Directors considered the request and decided to accept this offer, signing on as a “pillar sponsor”. Update to CFIA AIRS Website

Chapter 97 was published to change the recommendation from "Approved" to "Refer to CFIA - Veterinary Inspection" for the following HS Codes for all countries except the United States. 97.05.00.1990 - Whole carcass or body parts, taxidermy preserved. 97.05.00.1992 - Horns, hooves, claws or beaks, preserved for display. 97.05.00.1993 - Decorative egg shells. Customs Controlled Areas

The CBSA has provided an update on Customs Controlled Areas (CCAs). The establishment of CCAs will allow CBSA officers to question, examine, and search people and goods within a CCA, including workers within a CCA who would not otherwise have to present themselves to the CBSA. The intent of a CCA is to strengthen security at Canada's airports and marine terminals. CBSA’s update is available here.

eManifest Communications Working Group

The Record of Discussion and Decision (RoDD) from the 8 June 2010 eManifest Communications Working Group are now available. This RoDD is available on the Advocacy section of the CSCB website; login is required. The CSCB has been actively involved in the consultative process surrounding e-Manifest and is represented on each of the e-Manifest subcommittees; the Design Working Group; the Steering Group; the Communications Group; and the Technical Design Working Group.
