CBSA Message (TCC18-046) - SUSPICIOUS EMAIL

April 24, 2018

Clients Affected: All clients who transmit data electronically

As standard practice, the CBSA does not send on behalf of other organizations.  It would appear that someone other than the CBSA is sending an email containing an attached malicious Word document with Macros and opening this file may pose a security risk to your work station and your organization. This software can steal protected data, delete documents or add software not approved by the user. If you suspect that something seems amiss, we recommend you check with your local IT department.

Today or perhaps during the next few days you may receive an email with the characteristics listed below:

  • Subject Line: TCC17-062 - Delays in Processing All EDI and Portal Messages / TCC17-062- Délai dans le traitement des données soumises par EDI et le Portail
  • Attachment: MC_Shipment.doc  (MD5 949247278263C2D3B54554ECC351B4C5)

Please note this email contains an attached malicious Word document with Macros.  Opening this file may pose a security risk to your work station and your organization.

If you receive such email, the CBSA strongly recommends not to open the email nor the attachment. If you have already opened the attachment malicious Word document, please communicate as soon as possible with your IT Support or IT Security team.

Should your IT Support/IT Security team require additional information, they can email us at CBSA/ASFC-IT_SECURITY/[email protected].

Make sure you recognize the signs of fraud and take action. Find out more on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.

Action Required: Please DELETE the said email and speak to your Internal IT Security.
