Ontario border crossings hit record low

… Border crossings into Ontario by foreigners hit a record low in January, as extreme winter weather in Canada's most-visited province were the likely reasons U.S. travellers, especially, stayed away.
 
Overall, travellers from the United States made an estimated 1.2 million trips to Canada through Ontario border crossings in January, a 15.3 per cent drop from December.
 
Declines in the number of entries into Canada were recorded in all provinces except British Columbia but Statistics Canada says it is unlikely the drop was principally related to new passport requirements for air travel into the United States implemented Jan. 23, since such country-wide regulations should have had similar impacts on all provinces.
 
Same-day car travel to Canada by U.S. residents fell to 961,000 trips, down 12.3 per cent from the previous month and the first time since record-keeping started in 1972 that same-day car travel failed to reach a million trips; Canadian residents made two million same-day car trips to the United States in January, down 2.6 per cent….
