Request for Removal of Customs Duty on 5-ply and 7-ply Hardwood

The Department of Finance is reviewing a request to remove the customs duty on imports of 5- play and 7-ply hardwood plywood for use in the manufacture of hardwood flooring.

This plywood is classified under tariff item No. 4412.14.00, dutiable at five per cent MFN, and at Free under the US Tariff and Mexico Tariff, if of US or Mexican origin. There is also a GPT rate of three per cent for this product.

The applicant claims that this plywood is unavailable from Canadian production, and that duty-free entry would assist it in becoming more competitive.

Members with an interest in this matter should contact Mr. Paul Robichaud in the International Trade Policy Division, at 613-992-2510, by fax at 613-992-6761 or by e-mail at [email protected] by 4 June 2001.
