Transport officials give green light to Mexican trucks

Transportation officials told a Senate subcommittee … they have met congressional requirements to go forward with a pilot program that would allow Mexican trucks on U.S. highways….
 
The pilot program that the administration announced Feb. 23 will allow a limited number of Mexican trucks to operate beyond a limited range of the U.S.-Mexico border.
 
Cross-border trucking is one of the few remaining unfulfilled terms of NAFTA, and one that has been vigorously opposed by labor and environmental groups….
 
Department of Transportation Inspector General Calvin L. Scovel 3rd said that the U.S. has made significant progress in safety at the borders. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has increased its manpower to expedite truck inspections, but must ensure it has appropriate screening mechanisms in place.
 
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorsed the pilot program in written testimony….
