Surface Trade with Canada and Mexico Edges Down in September

The Department of Transportation reports that U.S. surface transportation trade in goods with NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico totalled $71.8 billion in September, down 0.6 percent from August but up 7.5 percent from a year earlier. Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline and accounts for about 88 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico.

Surface trade between the U.S. and Canada totalled $46.8 billion in September, up 9.7 percent from September 2007. Exports by truck increased 2.6 percent by value while imports by truck were unchanged…

According to the DOT, the value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in September was up 46.9 percent compared to September 2003 and 82.8 percent from September 1998, including an 87.6 percent increase for imports and a 76.9 percent rise for exports.
