Canada Requests World Trade Organization Consultations re US Case Against Canadian Beef Cattle

On 19 March Canada requested World Trade Organization (WTO) consultations with the United States over an American countervail investigation of imports of Canadian cattle. International Trade Minister Sergio Marchi, PC, MP said that "[m]any of the programs cited by US cattle producers have already been investigation and found to be consistent with international trade rules. Canada has therefore requested these consultations to ensure that the United States abides by its international obligations."

Although the request for WTO consultations will not bring an end to the American action, it sends a signal that Canada insists that the US strictly meet its international obligations in conducting the investigation. Parallel to the request for WTO consultations, the Government of Canada and the Canadian cattle industry will continue to work together to present the strongest possible case against the American industry allegations. The request for consultations gives the United States 30 days to justify its actions, after which Canada could request a WTO panel to resolve the issue.
