Request for Removal of Duty on Certain Aluminum Can Lids

The Department of Finance has received a request for the removal of Customs duty on certain aluminum can lids, with an easy-open feature, for use in the manufacture of food cans.

The aluminum lids in question are coated or lacquered on one or both sides, depending on the food product to be canned, and have a compound seal. The easy-open feature is basically a pull-tab similar to a beverage can lid. The lids are classified under tariff item 8309.90.90 and are subject to a 6.5 per cent MFN rate of duty.

Members with an interest in this matter should contact Mr. Dean Steadman at 613-947-4508 or by fax at 613-992-6761 by 20 April 2000.
