Request for Removal of Tariff on Palm Oil Fatty Acids

The Department of Finance is seeking views on a request that the Department has received for removal of the tariff on palm oil fatty acids for use in the manufacture of de-inking paper.

Palm oil fatty acids are the main products used to remove ink from newsprint. As a result of the de- inking process, the newspaper is transformed into pulp, which is then sold to various pulp and paper companies.

The product is classified under tariff item No. 3823.19.00.22 and is dutiable at 8% under the Most- Favoured-Nation (MFN) tariff. There is no General Preferential Tariff (GPT) for this product.

The applicant claims that this product is not available from Canadian sources, and that tariff relief would assist it to compete more effectively.

Members with an interest in this request should contact Ms. Shezara Ali in Domestic Tariff Affairs by February 27, 2002, at 613-992-4418, or by fax at 613-992-6761.
