Request for Fast Track Tariff Relief on Certain Woven 100 Per Cent Cotton Fabrics

The Department of Finance is seeking views on a request that the department has received for "fast track tariff relief" on certain woven 100 per cent cotton fabrics for use in the manufacture of tailored collar shirts.

The applicant requests that the parameters of tariff item 5208.43.50 be modified as shown in quotation marks:

Solely of single cotton yarns, measuring in the warp 322 decitex or more but not exceeding 374 decitex (31.06 metric number or less but not less than 26.74 metric number) and in the weft 336 decitex or more but not exceeding "452" decitex (29.76 metric number or less but not less than "22.12" metric number), having in the warp "223" yarns or more but not exceeding 300 yarns per 10 cm and in the weft "177" yarns or more but not exceeding 226 yarns per 10 cm, brushed on both sides, for use in the manufacture of tailored collar shirts

The applicant claims that these fabrics are not available from Canadian sources and that tariff relief would enhance its competitiveness in domestic and foreign markets.
