ISPS compliance up in latest IMO survey

The following article is excerpted from the 16 June 2004 edition of “The Journal of Commerce”.

The International Maritime Organization said Wednesday [16 June] that less than a third of eligible ports (schedules) and slightly more than 10 percent of ships are in compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, global anti-terror rules which go into effect July 1.

The data as of June 16 came from a survey of 39 governments representing 83.6 percent of world merchant shipping by gross tonnage and 67.4 per cent by number of ships.

Of the 21,374 ships liable to the ISPS Code Ship, 16,570 had submitted security plans. A total of 6,127 International Ship Security Certificates, or 28.7 percent, had been issued….

Of 6,117 port facilities liable to the Code, 1,970 had submitted Port Facility Security Plans. A total of 663, or 10.8 percent, had been approved….
