[US] Customs finds 97% compliance with import regulations

Most importers and brokers are receiving high grades from Customs and Border Protection for their compliance with commercial regulations.
 
“Last year there was a highly compliant rate of 97 percent for all trade into the United States,” said Daniel Baldwin, assistant commissioner, in Customs’ Office of International Trade.
 
With the vast majority of importers and brokers doing their best to comply with regulations covering classification, valuation and other commercial responsibilities, Baldwin said Customs can focus its resources on the 3 percent of the trade that is not compliant….
 
           
            The Office of International Trade, which overseas compliance programs in the commercial sector, is a new office at Customs. It integrates former Customs divisions such as Regulations and Rulings, Regulatory Audit, Strategic Trade and Trade Policy Programs….
 
The Office of International Trade must engage in more robust enforcement of commercial trade laws in order to reduce the rate of non-compliance below three percent, Baldwin said. Customs will uncover the problem areas not by stopping more shipments and risking delays in legitimate trade, but rather through post-entry audits, he said….
