The Department of Finance announced today that Canada’s official international reserves increased by an amount equivalent to US$79 million during December to US$65,819 million. Government of Canada moves to streamline aviation security regulations

The following is excerpted from a 4 January 2012 news release by Transport Canada. Canadian Ports Say US-Bound Traffic Has Fallen

The following is from the 4 January 2012 edition of the Journal of Commerce. Ports tell FMC that U.S.-bound container traffic has fallen 3.2 percent since 2000 Four Canadian ports said Wednesday their share of U.S.-bound containerized cargo has dropped in the last decade, contrary to the claims of members of Congress and U.S. West Coast ports that spurred a Federal Maritime Commission inquiry.

Study: Comparing Canadian and US price levels

The following is excerpted from a 4 January 2012 release by Statistics Canada. Canada and the United States share one of the longest borders in the world, their economies are intertwined, and trade between them is extensive. Consequently, Canadian consumers have a widely held expectation that the prices they pay for many products should be roughly equal to US prices, after adjusting for the exchange rate. ACE participation picks up

The following is from the 3 January 2012 edition of American Shipper. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is making progress getting more entry summary filings for imports entered in its new Automated Commercial Environment. The entry summary is the document submitted by an importer or its customs broker after cargo has been accepted into the country that covers the merchandise classification, duty, taxes and fees.

Correction Period for December Softwood Lumber Permits

Brokers are advised that the correction period for DECEMBER 2011 Softwood Lumber permits ends January 10, 2012, at 17:00 ET. We remind you of the importance of submitting correct information on permits as this is imperative to the operation of the Softwood Lumber Agreement. CBSA Message: Classification Numbers under tariff item 39219099

The following message is from CBSA (EDI12-001). Further to message EDI11-087 sent December 19, 2011, this is to advise that the Customs Commercial System was updated yesterday to show the 2011 rate of duty of 2% for MFN and GPT for classification numbers under tariff item 3921.90.99. These changes will go out on the automatic updates (AA records – Class files updates) and were scheduled to be available in your systems yesterday evening. __________________________________________________

Customs chief Bersin returns to DHS post

The following is from the 3 January 2012 edition of American Shipper. President Obama on Friday named Alan Bersin assistant secretary for international affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, keeping him in the fold to continue pursuing initiatives on cross-border trade and travel in a different position. DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano made the announcement at a ceremony in Washington in which leadership of Customs and Border Protection was transferred from Bersin to Deputy Commissioner David Aguilar.
