New Canada environment minister offers no new plans

The following is a 28 January 2011 news release by Reuters Canada. Canada's new environment minister said he plans to work closely with the United States where possible on new policies and that no new legislation is needed to carry out the Conservative government's environmental plan. Peter Kent, in his first speech since being named environment minister earlier this month, said the government would continue with a sector-by-sector regulatory approach on the environment, aligning its policies with those of the United States where appropriate.

D11-3-1, Marking of Imported Goods

1. This memorandum has been updated to reflect changes to the Regulations for Determining the Country of Origin Goods Imported From a NAFTA Country for the Purpose of Specifying That Certain Goods be Marked and the Regulations for Determining the Country of Origin Goods Imported From a non-NAFTA Country for the Purpose of Specifying that Certain Goods be Marked. 2. The section titled Penalties has been added to reflect the authority to issue administrative monetary penalties for failure to comply with marking requirements.

Second NEXUS Lane opening at Canada Border Services Agency plaza

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority (PBA) today announced the installation of a second NEXUS lane within the Peace Bridge CBSA plaza. This new NEXUS lane will provide additional expedited processing opportunities during busy commuter times and other peak travel events at the crossing.

CN 11-001: Implementation of the Strengthening of the Canada Border Services Agency's Procedure Respecting the Importation of Goods Contaminated With Soil and/or Related Matter 1. The purpose of this notice is to confirm that February 1, 2011 marks the end of the twelve-month transition period leading up to the Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) implementation of a strengthened commercial importation process respecting goods contaminated with soil and/or related matter (soil).

77YY Itinerant Highway Carrier Code

With the implementation of eManifest, all carriers will be required to use a CBSA-assigned carrier code and the use of itinerant carrier codes will be eliminated. As such, effective April 1, 2011, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will no longer accept the “77YY” itinerant highway carrier code.

Global Forum on Trade Statistics: Getting the figures right

On 2-4 February 2011, statisticians from developed and developing economies will discuss methods on how to measure trade accurately, in Geneva at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The issue of trade is high on the political agenda, as was evident in the recent G20 meeting in Seoul where the world leaders wanted to closely monitor and reduce global trade imbalances. Getting the numbers right is therefore essential.

Canada finmin sees reasons for resilient dollar

The following is a 28 January 2011 news release by Reuters Canada. Canada's dollar is likely to prove resilient on the back of relatively strong commodity prices and healthy public finances, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Friday. "We're not going back to the old days, the Canadian dollar (at) 65 cents, 75 cents, that led to some inefficiencies in business," Flaherty told Reuters Insider TV on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Port of Saint John achieves its highest cargo tonnage ever

The following is from the 27 January 2011 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. The Port of Saint John exceeded 30 million metric tonnes of cargo in a single year for the first time ever in 2010. Cargo statistics released by the Saint John Port Authority show traffic recovery was experienced in majority of sectors through the year. A 13% increase in total port traffic was experienced with tonnage reaching 30,500,000 metric tonnes.

Rail carloadings surge 7.9% in November

The following is from the 27 January 2011 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. Canadian railways carried 24.8 million tonnes of freight in November, up 7.9% from the same month in 2009, according to a report from Statistics Canada. In terms of tonnage, non-intermodal domestic freight loadings were the largest contributing factor behind this increase, according to the report.

Queenston-Lewiston Bridge plaza improvements completed
