Napolitano denies border is unsecured

The following is from the 10 February 2011 edition of "montrealgazette.com". U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano yesterday sought to debunk a congressional report's finding that U.S. border agents adequately secure only 51 kilometres of the boundary with Canada.

N.A. surface trade up 15.5% y-o-y in November

The following is from the 8 February 2011 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US and Mexico was 15.5% higher in November than in November 2009, reaching $68.1 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. BTS reported that the value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico fell 3.6% in November from October.

In Memoriam

The CSCB has been advised that, last month, two members of the B.C. customs brokerage community passed away. James Albert (Jim) Kendall was the President and CEO of Summit Customs Brokers. Thomas (Tommy) Jorgensen founded Columbia Customs Brokers along with several associates. The CSCB on behalf of its members sends its condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Kendall and Mr. Jorgensen.

In Memoriam - Donald Butcher

The CSCB is saddened to learn of the passing of Donald Butcher yesterday in Kelowna. Don was former President of Thompson Ahern & Company and The Federated Group. He is survived by his daughter Lisa (Stephan) Mostowy and their daughters Siena and Simone; son Michael (Jasmine) Butcher and his brother Edwin Arthur Butcher. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 10 at 1pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the BC Cancer Agency, No. 2-111, 675 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1L3.

Government of Canada Announces Resumption of Beef Exports to Costa Rica

The following is a 7 February 2011 news release by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Minister of International Trade Peter Van Loan announced today that Costa Rica has reopened its market to allow for full, unrestricted access to Canadian beef and beef product exports. To highlight this success, Canada’s top quality beef will be served at the Canadian Ambassador’s Official Residence in San José, marking the first time in almost a decade that Canadian beef will be shipped to Costa Rica.
