NAFTA surface trade climbs nearly 15% in October

The following is from the 10 January 2011 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US and Mexico was 14.9% higher in October than in October 2009, reaching $70.6 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. The value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in October remained 2.9% below the October 2008 level despite the 2009-2010 increase.

Dangerous Goods Exported to Thailand

The following is from the 10 January 2011 edition of The Journal of Commerce ”joc.com”. Some ocean carriers are suspending delivery of hazardous materials at Thailand ports because of a new Thai regulation requiring advance payment of insurance. The regulation implemented by Thailand’s Maritime Department as of Feb. 11 requires all carriers transporting dangerous goods to and from Thailand to provide insurance to cover any third parties who may be affected by loading and discharging of dangerous goods.

Shanghai Becomes World’s Largest Container Port

The following is from the 10 January 2011 edition of The Journal of Commerce ”joc.com”. Trade growth, boost from World Expo pull southern China port ahead Shanghai overtook Singapore as the world's busiest container port in 2010, helped by continuing growth in Chinese trade and the business generated by the World Expo it hosted last year, the city government said Monday.

Canadian ground transportation rates dip slightly in October

The following is from the 7 January 2011 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. After several months of steady increases, the cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers dropped slightly in October, according to results published this week by the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI). The CGFI Total Freight Cost Index decreased by .8% in October compared to September, while the Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of fuel surcharges assessed by carriers, decreased .92%.

CBSA Message: LVS Releases

The following is a message from CBSA (EDI11-001). All LVS releases for the period of December 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010 should be consolidated and must be transmitted to the CBSA by Monday, January 24, 2011. The release date should be reported as December 31, 2010 due to the tariff changes implemented in January 2011.

2011 Tariff

Several members have brought to our attention that the print copy of the 2011 Customs Tariff and the PDF version of the complete tariff on CBSA’s website is incomplete. Specifically, chapters 74 and 96 are missing all tariff information and contain only the notes. CBSA is aware of this and are taking steps to make corrections. Note that the “by Chapter” version of the tariff on CBSA’s website contains chapters 74 and 96 in their entirety.

NAFTA trade up 14.9% in October

The following is from the 7 January 2011 edition of the "American Shipper". Surface transport-related trade between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico was up 14.9 percent in October, compared to the same monthly period in 2009, reaching $70.6 billion, according to the U.S. Transportation Department’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics on Thursday. However, the value of trade for the month remained 2.9 percent below the October 2008 level, the agency said.

Labour Force Survey

The following is excerpted from a 7 January 2011 news release by Statistics Canada. Employment edged up for the second consecutive month in December, with an increase of 22,000. The unemployment rate held steady at 7.6%. Compared with December 2009, employment increased by 2.2% (+369,000), following a decline of 1.1% the previous year.
