Canadian dollar strengthens on U.S. economic optimism

The following is a 6 January 2011 news release by Reuters Canada. Canada's dollar firmed against its U.S. counterpart on Thursday, picking up steam for a second day as upbeat U.S. private employment data in the last session raised the outlook for the domestic economy. Along with the greenback, the Canadian currency has benefited from greater optimism for the U.S. economic recovery.

Canada Bound Rainbow Bridge NEXUS Lane Closing January 23, 2011

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today announced that following a review of its NEXUS services in the Niagara-Fort Erie Region, the Canada-bound Rainbow Bridge NEXUS lane will be closing, effective January 23, 2011. This will enable the CBSA to concentrate on delivering its services to the wide range of other travellers using the Rainbow Bridge. NEXUS members can continue to use the NEXUS-only lanes at the Whirlpool Bridge. The NEXUS-only Whirlpool Bridge is a convenient alternative * Located less than two kilometres from the Rainbow Bridge

Smaller businesses endured recession better: study

The following is from the 5 January 2011 edition of "cbc.ca". Canada's small- and medium-sized businesses in the private sector fared better during the recession than their larger counterparts, according to an RBC Economics report. Paul Ferley, assistant chief economist, RBC, said the findings debunk concerns that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are generally more impacted by economic downturns.

Classification of Furniture Sets - Valuation

Further to our message of December 22, 2010, regarding the tariff classification of furniture sets, CBSA has now provided additional information on how to determine the value furniture sets that are sold at one price but must be classified separately if they are shipped in separate packages. Exceptions to EDI

The BCCC PARS-EDI sub-committee, of which the CSCB is a member, has asked if there are additional exceptions to EDI that CBSA should consider. Current exceptions to EDI are listed in D-Memorandum 17-1-4, and are reproduced below. Certain exceptions to the requirement of transmitting RMD documentation using EDI apply. The exceptions are as follows: (a) goods are subject to the requirements of another government department or agency and there is no EDI link between the CBSA and the OGD or agency to satisfy the requirement;

Canadian dollar boosted by strong oil prices

The following is from the 4 January 2011 edition of "cbc.ca". The Canadian dollar kicked off the new year above parity with the U.S. dollar as oil prices hit a two-year high. The loonie gained 0.13 cents to 100.67 cents US. Recent strength in the Canadian dollar has been fuelled by higher crude prices. The February crude contract was unchanged at $91.54 US a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

CBP’s eCERT ready for Australian beef

The following is from the 29 December 2010 edition of the "American Shipper". U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Jan. 3 will begin to require all export certifications for Australian beef imports to be filtered through its Electronic Certification System. CBP said the change to eCERT, which replaces the paper-based filing method, is being made at the request of Australia's Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries and with the U.S. government’s approval.

Statement by the Canada Border Services Agency on Joint Operations

The following is a 29 December 2010 news release by CBSA. Pierre Sabourin, Vice-President of Operations of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), today provided the following statement regarding incorrect media reports concerning CBSA's role in joint operations with law enforcement partners. The CBSA is NOT ceasing all Joint Forces Operations. The CBSA values its strong relationships within the law enforcement community and actively participates in 30 Joint Forces Operations partnerships with Canadian and American police agencies. This will continue.

Government Announces 2011 Automobile Deduction Limits and Expense Benefit Rates for Business

The following is a 29 December 2010 news release by Department of Finance. The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today announced that the automobile expense deduction limits and the prescribed rates for the automobile operating expense benefit will remain unchanged for 2011. The Government reviews these rates and limits annually. Specifically:

Ontario manufacturing sector rebounds

The following is from the 29 December 2010 edition of "cbc.ca". Ontario's manufacturing sector is starting to slowly recover from the effects of the worldwide recession, according to a report released Wednesday. "In short, 2010 was a much better year for Ontario manufacturing than the preceding years were," according to the report by the Ontario Manufacturing Council, a government advisory group comprised of business and labour leaders.

Canada's economy grows 0.2% in October

The following is from the 23 December 2010 edition of "cbc.ca". Canada's real gross domestic product increased 0.2 per cent in October, Statistics Canada said Thursday. That's a reversal from the 0.1 per cent decline in the value of goods and services produced in September. The increase was less than some economists were predicting.
