Perfluorooctane Sulfonate and its Salts and Certain Other Compounds Regulations (PFOS Regulations) AFFF Factsheet and Deadline Reminder

This letter is a reminder that the deadline prohibiting the use of Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF) containing perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the PFOS Regulations is approximately one year away. The attached factsheet, “ Information Regarding Aqueous Film-Forming Foams in Relation to the Perfluorooctane Sulfonate and its Salts and Certain Other Compounds Regulations“ contains useful information on PFOS, AFFF and the main regulatory requirements.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is inviting comments on how the Agency will strengthen food inspection in Canada. The CFIA is designing a single and consistent approach to inspection that will be applied across all food commodities that are either imported or produced domestically.

Government of Canada secures market access to Ukraine to benefit Canadian swine producers

The following is excerpted from a 31 May 2012 news release by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The Canadian swine industry will benefit from market access to Ukraine, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced today. Effective immediately, the Ukrainian market has been re-opened to Canadian live swine, and opened for the first time to Canadian swine genetics.

Loonie hits lowest level of 2012

The Canadian dollar was trading below 97 cents US on Thursday, dragged down by weak commodity prices and discouraging news about the U.S. job market. Canadian economic accounts, first quarter 2012 and March 2012

The following is excerpted from a 1 June 2012 release by Statistics Canada. Real gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.5% in the first quarter, the same pace as in the previous quarter. Business investment contributed the most to first-quarter GDP growth. Final domestic demand grew 0.3%. On a monthly basis, real GDP by industry edged up 0.1% in March.

Rail strike over but backlog could take 'weeks' to clear

The following is from the 1 June 2012 edition of CBC News. The union representing 4,800 striking Canadian Pacific Railway employees is asking them to report for work this morning. The Teamsters made the call after federal back-to-work legislation became law last night. The workers, including locomotive engineers, walked out nine days ago, forcing Canada's second-biggest railway to shut down its freight operations. CP Rail says its freight service will be back to normal in 48 hours.

Canada and the United States announce air cargo security improvements

The following is excerpted from a 31 May 2012 news release by Transport Canada. Today, Canada and the United States announced that both governments have agreed to the mutual recognition of, and cooperation on, air cargo security in both countries. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Mr. James D. Nealon, Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy on behalf of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator John Pistole, made the announcement.

Government of Canada Launches Investment Talks with Benin and Burkina Faso
