Retail Trade, November 2011

The following is excerpted from a 24 January 2012 release by Statistics Canada. Retail sales in November rose for a fourth consecutive month, increasing 0.3% to $38.7 billion. Gains were reported in 7 of 11 subsectors, representing 65% of total retail sales. In volume terms, sales were also up for a fourth month in a row, increasing 0.5%. Panels set up on X-ray scanners, chicken broiler products and renewable energy equipment

The following is excerpted from a 20 January 2012 news release by the World Trade Organization. On 20 January 2012, the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) established three panels: one to review anti-dumping duties imposed by China on EU X-ray scanners, one on China’s anti-dumping and countervailing measures on US chicken broiler products and one to review measures applied by Canada in its renewable energy sector. It also adopted the panel and Appellate Body reports which reviewed the Philippines’ tax regime on distilled spirits.

Exporter Japan eyes first trade deficit in 3 decades

Japan probably produced its first trade deficit last year in more than three decades as energy imports surged to cover for the loss of nuclear power following the Fukushima disaster, a major blow to an economy built on its exports prowess. Mega Brands withdraws Lego lawsuit

December inflation a central banker's "dream"
