The Obama administration on Wednesday unveiled its global supply chain security strategy on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The document is a whole-of-government approach towards balancing security and international trade that acknowledges to properly manage cross-border commerce extends beyond the Department of Homeland Security.

Japan Posts First Annual Trade Deficit in 31 Years

The following is from the 25 January 2012 edition of the Journal of Commerce. Suffered a $32 billion largely because of disaster-caused supply chain disruptions Japan suffered a trade deficit of $32 billion with the rest of the world in 2011— the first annual deficit in 31 years —primarily because of the effects of the devastating earthquake and tsunami, the Finance Ministry said Wednesday.

EU trade deal expected by summer

Relatively few issues remain within the Canada-European free trade talks, and officials expect the deal to be completed by the summer, European representatives say. "The negotiations are still going on, but they are really getting down to details that need to be solved, and simply going on with a very good dynamic," said Tomás Dupla del Moral, director for the Americas for the European External Action Service, during a visit to Ottawa last week.

Canadian Cattle, Sheep and Goat Producers Gain Market Access to Philippines

Canadian cattle, sheep and goat producers will benefit from new access to yet another international market. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Ed Fast announced today that the Government of Canada has secured live ruminant market access to the Philippines.

EICS: PKI Scheduled Maintenance, 27-29 January

Bulletin - PKI Maintenance Schedule (EICS Web and EDI): The PKI Certificate Authority (ICM) is scheduling system maintenance during the weekend of 27-29 January 2012. The PKI Directory Service will be transferred to a back-up system on Friday, January 27, 2012 between 20:00 and 24:00 hrs (midnight) ET, and will revert to the main system on Sunday, January 29th between 14:00 and 18:00 hrs ET. PKI services may be intermittently unavailable during these switchovers.

The EDIFACT 96.A and 99.B mapping is unchanged. The overall look of the document has been refreshed as well.

U.S. economy unlikely to fully recover: Carney
