The following is excerpted from a 3 February 2012 release by Statistics Canada. Employment was virtually unchanged in January, and the unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to 7.6% as more people searched for work. CTCS Grandfathering - CCS (US) Recognized

We are pleased to announce that the CCS (US) designation has been added to the list of designations for CTCS (Certified Trade Compliance Specialist) grandfathering. Currently, the CTCS designation recognizes the existing expertise of those who hold the CCS, PFF, CITT, CITP and CCS (US) designations. Grandfathering, available until March 31, 2012, means that one can attain the CTCS designation without the requirement of enrolling in the CTCS program of study.

Job Creation Stalls in January

The following is excerpted from a 3 February 2012 news release by The Conference Board of Canada. The Canadian labour market took a break in January as job creation stalled. Relative to December, employment was virtually unchanged, with the economy adding a mere 2,300 jobs. This small gain was not enough to keep the unemployment rate from edging up 0.1 percentage point to 7.6 per cent. These latest results were not surprising—The Conference Board of Canada’s Help-Wanted Index had pointed to soft job creation in the near term.

Official International Reserves

The Department of Finance announced today that Canada’s official international reserves increased by an amount equivalent to US$557 million during January to US$66,376 million. Data shows Canada set for subpar growth in fourth quarter

The following is excerpted from the 31 January 2012 edition of Reuters Canada. Canada's economy unexpectedly shrank in November for the first time since May, setting the stage for lackluster fourth-quarter growth and a sluggish start to 2012. Oil and gas production slid in the month, outweighing gains in manufacturing and most services industries to trigger a 0.1 percent contraction of gross domestic product, Statistics Canada said on Tuesday. Minister of Finance Concludes Middle East Visit Aimed at Stronger Relations and Increased Trade

The following is excerpted from a 2 February 2012 news release by the Department of Finance Canada. The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today concluded a visit to Israel and the West Bank that featured meetings with high-level officials as well as banking and business leaders from the region. “This visit has been an invaluable opportunity to share perspectives on issues of mutual interest, including trade and investment, as well as innovative approaches to support research and development and venture capital,” said Minister Flaherty.

Canadian dollar bounces to session peak after U.S. jobs data

The following is from the 3 February 2012 edition of Reuters Canada. The Canadian dollar reversed early losses to hit a session peak against its U.S. counterpart on Friday after data showed the American economy added far more jobs than the market expected. Shortly after the report, the Canadian dollar rose to C$0.9980, or US$1.0020. It had earlier hit a session low of C$1.0034 following soft Canadian jobs data. Canada's currency finished at C$0.9996, or US$1.0004, on Thursday. _________________________________________________

Government of Canada Investments to Help Dairy Farmers Boost Exports

The following is excerpted from a 2 February 2012 news release by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Canadian dairy farmers will grow their businesses through increased market opportunities with new support from the Harper Government. Parliamentary Secretary Pierre Lemieux, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, announced today an investment of nearly $1.3 million at the Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) annual policy conference in Ottawa.

Open U.S.-Canada wheat trade sought

The following is from the 3 February 2012 edition of American Shipper. The National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) and U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) each passed a resolution calling for an open border with Canada that provides reciprocal bilateral wheat trade. Under a December 2011 law, which still faces some legal challenges, the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) will lose its grain marketing monopoly Aug. 1, allowing western Canadian farmers to sell their wheat and barley in the open market.

Strengthening measures to protect Canada from the Asian long-horned beetle
