CBSA Message: Provincial Holiday for some Provinces

The following is a CBSA message (EDI12-014) Family Day – Monday, February 20, 2012 in the provinces of Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; For the purposes of calculating the accounting period, February 20, 2012 will be considered a holiday for these provinces and any late accounting penalties will be waived without the client having to submit an application. This applies to transactions that were accounted for in the affected provinces and released between February 13, 2012 and February 20, 2012.

Monthly Survey of Manufacturing, December 2011

The following is excerpted from a 16 February 2012 release by Statistics Canada. Manufacturing sales advanced 0.6% to $49.9 billion in December, the fifth increase in six months. The transportation equipment industry led the gain. Sales increased in 12 of 21 industries representing about two-thirds of Canadian manufacturing. The gains occurred primarily in durable goods industries, where sales rose 2.1%. Sales of non-durable goods fell 0.9%.

Guidelines for faxing import documentation

The following message is from CFIA. B.C. lumber sales to China falling rapidly

Weakening construction market in Asian country blamed for 36 per cent decline in December Sales of British Columbia lumber to China have begun to plunge, a startling reversal from the boom forest products companies enjoyed through much of 2011. The lumber industry predicts additional growth in 2012 but the current situation is difficult. Inventories of wood are still piled up in China amid a weakening construction market there, sapping demand for B.C. lumber.

Sixty companies join trade mission to India

The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) and the Town of Markham, Ont., led a trade mission to India and the UAE in January, providing a unique opportunity for delegates to explore emerging markets and, in some cases, clinch deals. More than 60 small and medium-sized Canadian businesses visited Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Pune in India, and Dubai in the UAE.

Fenugreek leaves may be contaminated with the toxic weed Senecio vulgaris

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Fruiticana Produce Inc. are warning the public not to consume certain bunches of Fenugreek leaves because they may be contaminated with a toxic weed Senecio vulgaris. The bunches of Fenugreek leaves were sold exclusively through Fruiticana stores in British Columbia and Alberta from February 5, 2012 to February 11, 2012 inclusive... The importer, Fruiticana Produce Inc., Surrey, British Columbia is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
