The Canadian dollar (CAD/USD-I1.000.0030.30%) was just above parity with the U.S. dollar Tuesday morning as the greenback weakened against a variety of other currencies. The loonie was up 0.55 of a cent to 100.18 cents (U.S). The latest bout of U.S. dollar weakness comes amid worry about European government debt and simmering tensions over currencies and trade gaps ahead of the meeting of G20 leaders Thursday and Friday.

Elimination of Permit Fees for Steel

As the first step in eliminating the import permit requirement for items 80 and 81, carbon steel and specialty steel, the Export and Import Controls Bureau has announced the elimination of fees for these permits. The CSCB has asked that DFAIT provide the date, as soon possible, when import permits for these goods will no longer be required. NAFTA Certificate of Origin - Signature

CBSA has confirmed that a digital representation of a cursive signature is acceptable on a NAFTA Certificate of Origin. Members will recall that this is a long outstanding issue, with previous information received often confusing. The following, from CBSA, should finally bring this issue to a close.

FIRM Reports

Members have expressed concern that requests for Facility for Information Retrieval Management (FIRM) reports are not being accepted by CBSA in all cases. CBSA have now confirmed that they will issue these reports when requested, and will be centralizing their production. Information about requests for FIRM reports is found in paragraphs 24 - 27 of D1-16-2, which will be updated to include the manner in which requests for FIRM reports are made. Until the centralized process is in place, members may continue to request FIRM reports from the regions.

Dollar hits parity on greenback weakness

The following is from the 5 November 2010 edition of “theglobeandmail.com”. The Canadian dollar has once again hit parity with its American counterpart. The loonie has been getting some lift in recent days as the U.S. dollar has continued to weaken following an announcement that the U.S. Federal Reserve will take more steps to bolster the American economy. The loonie was up a little more than a quarter of a cent at 100.02 cents (U.S.) in morning trading.
NAFTA surface trade makes year-over-year gains in August

The following is from the 5 November 2010 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US, and Mexico was 25.3% higher in August 2010 than in August 2009, reaching $68.0 billion, according to a report from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. The value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in August 2010 remained 5.9% below the August 2008 level despite the 2009-2010 increase.

It should be read with the Export and Import Permits Act (EIPA) and the EIPA Regulations. Where elements of the present Notice augment the EIPA and the EIPA Regulations, those elements are to be read as expressions of the Minister’s normal practices and procedures. This Notice replaces Notice to Importers No. 760, dated November 6, 2009, and is effective immediately.
