Canadian lumber making inroads in China

The following is excerpted from the 1 November 2010 edition of "montrealgazette.com". If an astute investor asked a Canadian forest industry executive just five years ago about lumber sales to China, the answer would probably have been: “China? China doesn’t buy our lumber.” How times have changed. China has become a bright spot on the balance sheets of companies still waiting for a recovery of the U.S. housing sector, its mainstay market for decades.

Growth resumes in Canada but U.S. woes threaten

The following is excerpted from the 29 October 2010 edition of "ca.reuters.com". Canada's economic recovery picked up speed again in August after stalling in July, but third-quarter growth is still on track to be the weakest since the rebound began, according to figures released on Friday. Statistics Canada said gross domestic product climbed 0.3 percent in August, bolstered by wholesale trade, manufacturing and oil and gas extraction. GDP shrank 0.1 percent in July, the first contraction in a year.

ACI is set to go live Oct. 31. Are shippers and carriers prepared?

The following is from the 29 October 2010 edition of Canadian Transportation and Logistics ”ctl.ca”. Halloween is on Sunday and cross-border shippers and carriers may be feeling more than a little spooked this year as Oct. 31 also marks the roll-out of Canada Border Service Agency's (CBSA's) ACI (Advance Commercial Information) eManifest program.

Correction Period for October Softwood Lumber Permits

Brokers are advised that the correction period for OCTOBER 2010 Softwood Lumber permits ends Tuesday November 9th 2010, at 17:00 ET. We remind you of the importance of submitting correct information on permits as this is imperative to the operation of the Softwood Lumber Agreement. Please submit permit corrections for the month of OCTOBER before the end of the correction period, as is the case for every allocation month of the year.

CBSA Message: Processing delays

The following is a CBSA message (EDI10-092). We are currently experiencing delays of 1 hour 15 minutes in the processing Electronic Release, ACI Marine, ACI Air, Rail, CSA and Highway Cargo data. Out IT is currently investigating the cause.

Advances for Canada's trade community at the land border

The following press release was issued today by CBSA. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today announced the implementation of the first stage of the eManifest initiative, a major Crown project that will change the way commercial goods coming into Canada are processed. As of today, electronic data interchange (EDI) systems are now available for highway carriers who can now transmit their pre-arrival cargo and conveyance data to the CBSA before arriving at the border.

Applications for Non-bonded Codes

CBSA has advised that two new forms are available. BSF329-7, Application to Transact Non-Bonded Highway Carrier Operations at Point of Arrival in Canada, replaces form E369 of the same name. http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/bsf329-7.pdf BST329-9, Application to Obtain a Non-Bonded Freight Forwarder Code (to Supply Electronic Supplementary Data for Advance Commercial Information (ACI) Only), replaces form E369-1, of the same name.

Update to CFIA AIRS Website

Update of CSCB Tuition Fees

After a review of our course pricing policy, it has been decided that an increase in tuition fees for the Introduction to Customs Course and Professional Development Modules (PDM) was warranted.
