NAFTA Trade Up 17.4 Percent in February

Vehicles are top commodity in U.S.-Canada trade, at $8.7 billion The value of surface-transportation trade between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico rose 17.4 percent year-over-year to $78.1 billion in February, the Transportation Department reported. In February, 87.4 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved via land, 8.7 percent moved by vessel, and 3.9 percent moved by air.

Non-Resident Importers and the Non-federally Regulated Food Sector

The CSCB has asked the CFIA to confirm that, under the new requirements for importer licensing in the non-federally regulated food sector, non-resident importers may continue to operate as they are now. CFIA has confirmed that NRI's will be able to continue to operate as they are now with the "initial receiver" of the goods in Canada having to obtain the importer licence. Zero Class Code HS

The CBSA has asked that the CSCB send a reminder to members concerning use of the “Zero Class Code” HS. This reminder follows. The Canada Border Services Agency has been monitoring the “Zero Class Code” (ZCC) since its debut in September 2011. The ZCC is a temporary measure to assist importers and customs brokers to prepare for the full implementation of mandatory harmonized system codes. Please refer to Customs Notice 11-016 for more details on the ZCC.

Canadian economy shrinks slightly in February

The following is excerpted from the 30 April 2012 edition of CBC News. Canada's gross domestic product declined by 0.2 per cent in February, which means the country's overall economy contracted. Temporary closures in mining and other industries contributed to the decline, Statistics Canada said Monday.
