DHS waives deadline for 100% box scans

The following is from the 11 May 2012 edition of American Shipper. Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano has formally notified Congress that her department will postpone by two years the mandate that all inbound ocean containers be scanned for hidden nuclear weapons or other terror-related contraband at foreign ports by July 2012. The 9/11 Recommendations Act that required the 100-percent inspections included authority for the secretary to waive the deadline under certain conditions.

Canada missing the boat on trade with the BRICs

The following is excerpted from the 14 May 2012 edition of The Globe and Mail. When it comes to the BRICs, Canada kind of missed the boat. According to calculations by Peter Hall, the chief economist at Export Development Canada, Canada’s share of Brazilian imports was 2.1 per cent in 1990, 1.9 per cent in 2000 and 1.5 per cent in 2010. International Trade Minister Ed Fast Highlights Benefits of Canada-EU Trade Agreement to Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters

Challenging the September 2012 CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) Exam

Employees of CSCB corporate members, who have at least two years’ work experience in a Canadian customs environment, can acquire the CCS designation by passing the CCS examination that will be held on Saturday, 29 September 2012. The fee for this examination is $400 CDN.

[U.S.] Customs to Open Centers of Excellence and Expertise in Detroit and Houston

The following is from the 11 May 2012 edition of the Journal of Commerce. New offices join two others intended to bring consistency to commodity classification and clearance U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner David Aguilar announced Thursday that CBP will establish new Centers of Excellence and Expertise in Detroit and Houston, bringing to four the national centers designed to bring more uniformity and industry knowledge to Customs’ operations.

Export and import price indexes, March 2012

The following is excerpted from a 10 May 2012 release by Statistics Canada. Current- and fixed-weighted export and import price indexes (2002=100) on a customs or balance of payments basis are now available. Price indexes are listed from January 2002 to March 2012 for the five commodity sections and the major commodity groups (62 exports and 61 imports).
