China blasts U.S. over tariffs on solar imports

The following is from the 18 May 2012 edition of The Globe and Mail. The United States imposed punitive tariffs on solar panel imports from China, the latest in a series of trade disputes between the world’s two biggest economies and sparking accusations by Beijing of protectionism. The new tariffs of 30 per cent, much bigger than had been expected, were set on Thursday by the U.S. Commerce Department after it ruled in favour of local firms which said the Chinese exporters were dumping cut-price solar panels on their market.

TSA to Begin 100 Percent Global Cargo Screening December

Agency will begin screening all cargo from international passenger flights Dec. 3 The Transportation Security Administration will begin screening all cargo arriving from international passenger flights in early December, a year after the agency was tasked to expand its screening reach from the domestic to global scale.

Canada and U.S. Need to Pursue Asia-Pacific Markets Together, Minister Fast Says in Address to American Chamber of Commerce

Retailers brace for more cross-border shopping pain

The following is from the 16 May 2012 edition of The Globe and Mail. Canadians are spending far more on goods in the U.S. than federal data suggest, raising the stakes for domestic retailers trying to find ways to draw customers back into their stores. As much as 8 to 10 per cent of consumer spending on a raft of products is flowing to retailers outside the border, according to estimates in a report being released today by BMO Nesbitt Burns. That compares to Statistics Canada data that say 4 per cent of retail spending is shifting outside the country.

Alberta's international exports set to top $100 B in 2013

Update regarding the use of private laboratories accredited by the SCC to test fish imported by basic importers

Please note that the CFIA's website has been updated to reflect the prevailing practice of having all fish products on the Mandatory Inspection List (MIL) that are imported by basic importers tested in a CFIA laboratory. The option of using private laboratories accredited by the Standard Council of Canada (SCC) to test these products will be reconsidered as CFIA moves forward with its inspection modernisation initiative across all food programs.

Chapter 07 was published to add the end use "Samples for testing" for the following HS codes. 07.02 - Tomatoes, fresh or chilled 07.03 - Onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, fresh or chilled 07.04 - Cabbages, cauliflowers, kohlrabi, kale and similar edible brassicas, fresh or chilled. 07.05 - Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and chicory (Cichorium spp.), fresh or chilled. 07.06 - Carrots, turnips, salad beetroot, salsify, celeriac, radishes and similar edible roots, fresh or chilled.
