Simplified [U.S.] entry pilot gets underway

DHS Releases New Canadian Border Security Strategy

Customs Notice 12-017 - Commercial Hand Carried Goods (HCG) Release Process

As a result of CBSA’s carrier re-engineering project, carriers who no longer qualified as carriers had their carrier codes rescinded. And, as members are acutely aware, the result was that release requests for goods carried by these carriers could not be presented electronically and brokers had to resort to C-type entries. A working group which included the CSCB was formed to find a new release process for the importation of commercial goods being transported to Canada by an individual who is not a carrier.

EU diplomat: Canada-US integration an obstacle in trade talks

The following is excerpted from the 6 June 2012 edition of Embassy Magazine. Canada's economic integration with the United States is an obstacle to finalizing a key portion of the Canada-European Union trade talks, says an EU diplomat. Maurizio Cellini, head of the EU delegation's economic, commercial and trade section, says the rules of origin portion has still not been worked out. These rules have to do with determining whether a product can qualify, for example, as Canadian, and can therefore be exported and subject to duty-free treatment in the EU.

Correction Period for MAY Softwood Lumber Permits

Brokers are advised that the correction period for May 2012 Softwood Lumber permits ends June 11, 2012, at 17:00 ET. We remind you of the importance of submitting correct information on permits as this is imperative to the operation of the Softwood Lumber Agreement. Please submit permit corrections for the month of May before the end of the correction period, as is the case for every allocation month of the year. _________________________________________________

CSCB and CBSA Joint Session on Advanced HS Classification - Registration Open

Registration is open for corporate members located in Montreal to register for the third CBSA/CSCB joint seminar on HS Classification. CSCB Submission on Security Requirements

The CSCB response to CBSA’s request for input further to subcommittee discussions regarding CBSA’s account security requirements can be found at http://cscb.ca/sites/default/files/repository/CSCBproposalcustomsbroker…. We have focused on Release Prior to Payment security with some additional commentary on the requirements relating to customs broker licensing. This paper was approved by the CSCB Board of Directors at its recent meeting in Montreal.

CN 12-016, Release and Accounting of Casual Goods, Including Live Animals, in the Commercial Stream

The CSCB has requested clarification from CBSA regarding Customs Notice 12-016. CBSA has confirmed that this notice is simply a reminder that customs brokers/importers or an authorized person (no charge of service or fees, usually a friend or family member) can clear goods on behalf of someone else. Transporters, for instance, are not allowed. There is no change to the current process. The notice is available on the CBSA Web site at:

The Future of Customs discussed in Greece

The following is a 1 June 2012 news release by the IFCBA. The International Federation of Customs Brokers Associations (IFCBA) held its bi-annual world conference entitled “The Future of Customs Compliance: Business Models and Strategies” in Athens, Greece from May 8-12, 2012. The conference sessions were well attended by participants from all corners of the world, including Argentina, China, Canada, India, Korea, Mexico, and Nigeria, allowing the IFCBA to provide a global look at compliance and client services.

Bank of Canada maintains overnight rate target at 1 per cent

The following is excerpted from a 5 June 2012 news release by the Bank of Canada. The Bank of Canada today announced that it is maintaining its target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent. The Bank Rate is correspondingly 1 1/4 per cent and the deposit rate is 3/4 per cent.

Official International Reserves

The Department of Finance announced today that Canada’s official international reserves decreased by an amount equivalent to US$845 million during May to US$68,699 million. Details on the level and composition of Canada’s reserves as of May 31, 2012, as well as the major factors underlying the change in reserves, are provided below.
