CBSA Compliance Verification Priorities - July 2012

The following message has been sent from the CBSA to the CSCB: In the interest of transparency and the promotion of self-compliance, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has committed to publicly releasing a semi-annual list of all of its active trade compliance verification priorities. To that end, please find attached a copy of the July 2012 list, in both English and French, for distribution to your members. Please note that the next update is scheduled to be released shortly after January 1, 2013.

Second Report of the Nominating Committee

CBP delivers Simplified Entry

The following is excerpted from a July 2012 newsletter by CBP. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is proud to announce the delivery of the first phase of Cargo Release, known as Simplified Entry, in the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). CBP has received the first Simplified Entry filings at each of the three pilot ports of Indianapolis, Chicago, and Atlanta, as part of the pilot test that begin May 29, 2012. North American surface trade climbs 8.2% year-over-year in April

The following is excerpted from the 28 June 2012 edition of Canadian Transportation & Logistics. Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US and Mexico, was 8.2% higher in April than in April 2011, totalling $79.8 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. BTS reported that the April value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico rose 7.4% from April 2008, early in the recession, and increased by 60.4% from April 2009, late in the recession.

Tariff Notice - 2012-2

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) wishes to advise of amendments to the Departmental Consolidation of the Customs Tariff (Tariff) effective July 1, 2012, found in Tariff Amendment package T2012-3. Tariff items 8901.10.90, 8901.20.90, 8901.90.99, 8902.00.10, 8904.00.00, 8905.10.00, 8905.20.10, 8905.20.20, 8905.90.10, 8905.90.90 and 8906.90.99 have been amended to reflect scheduled rate reductions under the Canada-Europe Free Trade Agreement (tariff treatment numbers 22, 23 and 24). Please note that Tariff Notice T2012-2 addresses Tariff Amendment T2012-3.

Canada-Jordan Economic Growth and Prosperity Act Receives Royal Assent

A win for wine! Bill C-311 receives Royal Assent

The following is excerpted from a 28 June 2012 news release by Canada Revenue Agency. The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, announced that Dan Albas, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquihalla's Private Member's Bill C-311 is expected to receive Royal Assent today. Effective immediately, the amendment to the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act (IILA), removes the federal restrictions prohibiting individuals from moving wine from one province to another when purchased for personal use.
