eManifest Update

Following is a message from Bruna Rados, Director General, Major Projects Directorate, Canada Border Services Agency. I am pleased to share with you some important news on the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) eManifest initiative. On May 13, 2012, the CBSA deployed eManifest systems’ functionality for rail carriers to provide advance cargo and conveyance data on commercial goods coming into Canada.

Canada and Poland sign new tax convention

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk today witnessed the signing of a new tax convention that will reduce tax barriers and encourage increased trade and investment between the two countries.

HS classification and its compliance implications have been recognized by the CSCB and CBSA as a priority for education and training. As a result of our shared recognition of its importance and our ongoing collaboration on this subject area, we are pleased to announce that Montreal will be the site of a third CBSA/CSCB joint seminar on HS Classification. Presenters and participants will include representatives from both the CBSA (HQ and Regional) and the CSCB. This seminar will take place on June 19th and will be held at the Sheraton Montreal Airport Hotel in Dorval.

DHS waives deadline for 100% box scans

The following is from the 11 May 2012 edition of American Shipper. Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano has formally notified Congress that her department will postpone by two years the mandate that all inbound ocean containers be scanned for hidden nuclear weapons or other terror-related contraband at foreign ports by July 2012. The 9/11 Recommendations Act that required the 100-percent inspections included authority for the secretary to waive the deadline under certain conditions.

Canada missing the boat on trade with the BRICs

According to calculations by Peter Hall, the chief economist at Export Development Canada, Canada’s share of Brazilian imports was 2.1 per cent in 1990, 1.9 per cent in 2000 and 1.5 per cent in 2010.
