The two economic strikes working against Canada

The following is excerpted from the 19 April 2011 edition of The Gazette (montrealgazette.com). The high exchange rate for the Canadian dollar is making it much harder to reduce our unemployment rate and create new jobs in the manufacturing heartland of Quebec and Ontario.

Consumer Price Index

Consumer prices rose 3.3% in the 12 months to March, the largest year-over-year increase since September 2008. This advance follows a 2.2% increase in the 12 months to February. The overall increase in March was broad based. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.8% from February to March.

Application of Tariff Code as a Result of Compliance Verification

The CSCB recently asked CBSA about a situation where, during the course of an audit, a duty free classification was determined by CBSA to be incorrect and a change to a dutiable classification was requested. And, although the dutiable classification could be used in conjunction with a tariff code, the auditor advised that he could not include the use of the tariff code in his audit report. CBSA’s response to this, and a clarification of the process, follows.
