The following was written by Peter Hall, Vice-President and Chief Economist, Export Development Canada. It was the best of times. In late 2008, it turned into the worst of times. Then came abject pessimism, followed by a period of uncertainty and volatility. Sentiment was tentative as the world economy entered 2010, but the resumption of growth has lifted spirits, and prompted economy-watchers to hail the long-awaited recovery. Is this nascent rise the real thing, or does recovery still elude our grasp?
Canada’s economy grows 0.3 per cent

The following is excerpted from today's edition of the "globeandmail.com". The Canadian economy grew for a sixth straight month in February, as the manufacturing sector powered the recovery ahead while the Vancouver Winter Olympics also provided a lift. The 0.3 per cent expansion reported by Statistics Canada Friday was in line with economists’ forecasts and came largely on the strength of a 1.2 per cent gain for factories, which saw increases in production of goods such as metals and pharmaceuticals.

Canada Announces Another Step to Fast-Track the New Windsor-Detroit Border Crossing

Canada’s Transport Minister John Baird announced an important step to fast-track the construction of a new bridge at the Windsor-Detroit border crossing, which is the busiest commercial crossing in North America. The Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) has decided not to advertise for a new highway sufferance warehouse at this port. 2. Therefore, all bonded highway carriers transporting in-bond commercial freight destined for clearance at the port of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec should report to an alternate highway sufferance warehouse.

The following question and answer exchange was prompted by the new D17-1-8 and the new D17-1-5. The CSCB will be continuing its consultations with CBSA on several of the issues below and as always, we welcome any feedback from members to guide us in our representations. a. In the past, the practice has always been that any letters of authority (GST letter for example), written prior to the date of a published change of requirements have been deemed to be valid despite any new requirements. Will this still be the case?

The following message is from CBSA (EDI10-028 (Amendment)) Please note that there will be additional changes to the list of HS codes subject to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency requirements. The ACROSS system and the CBSA website will be updated Friday, April 30, 2010. Effective April 30, 2010, the range 1103130010 – 1103130020 and HS code 1104199000 will also be subject to CFIA requirements.

The following is excerpted from today's edition of the "Canadian Press". It may well be the biggest and most important trade negotiation that most Canadians have never heard of. While most of the news out of Europe of late has had to do with the Greek debt crisis and an ash-spewing volcano in Iceland, about 60 Canadian officials have been huddled in contentious trade talks with their European counterparts - at least video images of their counterparts - in what used to be Ottawa's city hall by the Rideau.
