Correction Period for AUGUST Softwood Lumber Permits

Brokers are advised that the correction period for AUGUST 2010 Softwood Lumber permits ends Thursday September 9th 2010, at 17:00 ET. We remind you of the importance of submitting correct information on permits as this is imperative to the operation of the Softwood Lumber Agreement. Please submit permit corrections for the month of AUGUST before the end of the correction period, as is the case for every allocation month of the year.

CBSA Message: Exchange rate for Myanmar (Burma) Kyat (MMK)

The following message is from CBSA (EDI10-075). The exchange rate, effective August 31, 2010, for Myanmar (Burma) Kyat (MMK), has been revised. The correct rate should have read 0.1874. Using the incorrect exchange rate will cause an error in the value for duty. The CCS system has been updated to show the correct exchange rate for this period.

NAFTA chemical case goes Canada's way

The following is from the 25 August 2010 edition of "www.embassymag.ca". The lawyers at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade are not bragging about it—at least not to date—but they've just won an impressive victory in an $80 million-plus NAFTA lawsuit. Earlier this month, a panel of three arbitrators dismissed claims filed by the US chemical company Chemtura under Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Imported Food Section Regulatory Proposal - Update (2)

Members were advised yesterday, August 26th., that the CSCB had confirmed with CFIA that a non-resident importer cannot apply for, or be the holder of, an import licence under the Imported Food Section Regulatory Proposal. Additional information has been provided by CFIA, and this information regarding non-resident importers is reproduced below. For the purpose of the regulatory proposal, the importers would have to maintain a Canadian presence in order to apply for an import licence.

Proposed Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) Penalties

Note that the proposed Administrative Monetary Penalties Regulations under the proposed Canada Consumer Product Safety Act differs from CBSA's Administrative Monetary Penalty System. Further to our message of August 17, the CSCB has confirmed with CFIA that a non-resident importer cannot apply for, or be the holder of, an import licence under the Imported Food Section Regulatory Proposal.
