Imported Food Sector Regulatory Proposal

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is seeking feedback on a regulatory proposal to enhance import controls. Imported food products in the Non Federally Register Sectors (NFRS) are affected. These goods include all food and food ingredients regulated solely under the Food and Drugs Act and account for 70% of the food products available in the Canadian marketplace. This regulatory proposal is being introduced to:

C274 Review

CBSA has asked the BCCC AMPS subcommittee to review AMPS contravention C274 and to look at ways for securing the timeframes for release of goods in order to achieve a greater level of compliance. C274 is applied for failure to comply with the timeframes for release as specified in D17-1-4, Appendix B.

Sanctions against Iran

Canada Passes Sanctions under the Special Economic Measures Act The following is excerpted from the 26 July 2010 news release by DFAIT. On July 26, 2010, Prime Minister Harper made a statement announcing that Canada is imposing sanctions on Iran under the Special Economic Measures Act. These sanctions are in addition to existing sanctions passed under the United Nations Act.

Softwood Lumber Products Export Charge Notice

The Canada Revenue Agency has published notice SWLN26 which provides additional information on the calculation of the FOB value and the export price by wholesalers as required under the Softwood Lumber Products Export Charge Act, 2006. Upcoming US Import Regulations

Advance Notice of New USDA Import Requirements for Spruce (Picea spp.) logs and Softwood Firewood from Canada The USDA’s Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is intending to issue new import requirements for spruce logs (Picea spp.) and softwood firewood originating in Canada, to prevent the spread of Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle (BSLB) into the United States. The new requirements will be specified in a Federal Order that will come into effect on the date of issue. APHIS predicts that the order will be issued by mid August 2010.

Canadian economic growth slows

The following is excerpted from the 11 August 2010 edition of “thestar.com” Canada’s trade deficit almost doubled in June as exports collapsed, adding significant new drag to the country’s slowing economic recovery. The trade report released Wednesday, coupled with a similarly weak reading south of the border, suggests the recovery in North America has entered a critical stage after a strong rebound earlier in the year.

Government of Canada to build new bridge at Cornwall

The following is excerpted from the 10 August 2010 news release by Transport Canada. The Government of Canada will fund construction of the new North Channel Bridge at the Seaway International Bridge in Cornwall. The announcement was made today by the Honourable John Baird, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, and Keith Robson, chair of the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited.
